Gathering Herself

Both hands raised into the hair create an extraordinary gesture of private absorption — arms lifted, elbows wide, the figure caught in a moment of self-gathering. The raised arms open the entire architecture of the torso. Valadon's charcoal strokes in the hair are dense and tactile against the spare lines of the arms.
