Dissolving Into White

The long descending line where the body becomes landscape — hip dissolving into the pale bedding, the contour barely distinguishable from the sheet. Vallotton makes the body continuous with its resting place, a slow dissolution of figure into ground. This is the painting's quiet exhalation.
