The exposed abdomen of the retreating fighter — taut, pale, vulnerable — the softest part of the body offered to the darkness. Bellows leaves this region almost abstractly rendered, the flesh a blur of cream and rose, as if the body is dissolving under the force of contact. The stomach as site of exposure.
