Construction and Initial Validation of a Multidimensional Measure of Work–Family Conflict

Abstract

This manuscript reports on three studies that utilized five different samples (N51211) to construct and validate a multidimensional measure of work–family conflict. The six dimensions of conflict measured include the combination of three forms of work–family conflict (time, strain, and behavior) and two directions of work–family conflict (work interference with family and family interference with work). The three studies assessed the content adequacy, dimensionality, reliability, factor structure invariance, and construct validity of the scale. The design of the final scale provides future researchers the flexibility to measure any of the six dimensions of work–family conflict individually.
