Abstract
While there is extensive research on firms' capabilities and managerial cognition, it is quite surprising that only a few articles have empirically addressed the interactions and interdependencies between cognition and capabilities. Observers have noted that managerial cognition is a missing element in the dynamic capabilities (DC) theory, and the role of the manager has been overlooked by scholars. It may be because there is great difficulty in finding a valid and reliable instrument to measure managerial cognition, and the efforts to develop such an instrument have thus far been limited. This study contributes to the literature and provides a solution to fill this gap by developing and validating a scale to measure managerial cognition. This study develops a scale for environmental interpretation and resource fungibility as two dimensions constituting the managerial cognition construct. The major finding in this study is that managerial cognition is an integrative process to understand the complexities of the external and internal environments.
