Joy
Joy is not happiness. Happiness is settled and recoverable on demand; joy is an arrival the body does not produce by trying. It rises through the chest, lifts the head, takes the eye outward — and it usually lands in a life that has known the opposite. Vela reads joy through writers who have refused to flatten it into positivity, and who keep insisting it is something the world gives, not something the self performs.

Joy is one of the easiest emotions to mis-handle on the page. The wellness register has been working on it for a decade, and the result has been a vocabulary that smooths joy into achievement: *find your joy*, *cultivate joy*, *practice joy daily*. The reading runs against that flattening.
The memoir that carries joy most honestly carries it next to its opposite. Trevor Noah's *Born a Crime* sets joy inside apartheid South Africa — the laughter at the kitchen table is real because the danger outside the kitchen is real. Joy Harjo's *Crazy Brave* — the title itself an instruction — reads joy as the inheritance the writer claims back from a childhood that tried to take it. Anne Frank's diary holds joy inside the annex: the writer at fifteen still capable of being delighted by a sentence, by a friendship, by an idea about her own future. Paul Kalanithi's *When Breath Becomes Air*, written in the last months of his life, treats joy as the recognition of having had this at all.
The contemplative tradition holds joy as a serious subject across centuries. The Psalms hold joy alongside lament without choosing between them. Augustine of Hippo, writing the *Confessions* in the late fourth century, names *gaudium* — joy — as a distinct affection of the soul, neither pleasure nor satisfaction. The Hasidic tradition, the Sufi poets, the early Franciscans each preserve a register of joy as a religious obligation: a refusal of despair held as faithfulness to the world.
Joy is not the same as happiness, pleasure, or contentment. Happiness is a temperament; joy is an arrival. Pleasure is sensory and short; joy can be sensory but is rarely brief. Contentment is the settled register that survives joy's absence; joy is the rise contentment makes room for. The four are kin; the reading keeps them distinct because the writers who have been most honest about each have kept them separate.

I always wanted to do the killing part. 'Is that a dagger that I see before me?" muttered Jo, rolling her eyes and clutching at the air, as she had seen a famous tragedian do. "No, it's the toasting fork, with Mother's shoe on it instead of the bread. Beth's stage-struck!" cried Meg, and the rehearsal ended in a general burst of laughter. "Glad to find you so merry, my girls," said a cheery voice at the door, and actors and audience turned to welcome a tall, motherly lady with a 'can I help you' look about her which was truly delightful. She was not elegantly dressed, but a noble-looking woman, and the girls thought the gray cloak and unfashionable bonnet covered the most splendid mother in the world. "Well, dearies, how have you got on today? There was so much to do, getting the boxes ready to go tomorrow, that I didn't come home to dinner. Has anyone called, Beth? How is your cold, Meg? Fortunately the story was The Constant Tin Soldier , which is droll, you know, so I could laugh, and I did, though I didn't understand half he read, for I couldn't help it, he was so earnest, I so excited, and the whole thing so comical. After that we got on better, and now I read my lessons pretty well, for this way of studying suits me, and I can see that the grammar gets tucked into the tales and poetry as one gives pills in jelly. I like it very much, and he doesn't seem tired of it yet, which is very good of him, isn't it? I mean to give him something on Christmas, for I dare not offer money. Tell me something nice, Marmee. I'm glad Laurie seems so happy and busy, that he has given up smoking and lets his hair grow. You see Beth manages him better than I did. I'm not jealous, dear, do your best, only don't make a saint of him. I'm afraid I couldn't like him without a spice of human naughtiness. Read him bits of my letters. I haven't time to write much, and that will do just as well. Thank Heaven Beth continues so comfortable. JANUARY A Happy New Year to you all, my dearest family, which of course includes Mr. L. and a young man by the name of Teddy. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed your Christmas bundle, for I didn't get it till night and had given up hoping. I stopped to gaze at it. It was a miserable-looking mucky pond about the size of a tennis court, but there was water in it. I was laughing with joy as I staggered down the slope toward the little dirt beach that surrounded the reservoir. I’d hiked my first twenty-mile day. I unbuckled Monster and set it onto the ground and went to the muddy shore and squatted to put my hands in the water. It was gray and warm as blood. When I moved my hands, the muck from the bottom rose in weedy tendrils and streaked the water black. I got my purifier and pumped the questionable liquid into my bottle. My purifier had remained as difficult to use as it had been that first time I used it at Golden Oak Springs, but it was especially difficult in this water, so dense with sludge that it half jammed my filter. By the time I was done filling one bottle, my arms shook with fatigue. I went to my first aid kit and took out my iodine pills and dropped a couple into the water. I’d brought the pills for just this reason, reinforcement should I ever be compelled to drink water that was likely contaminated. Even Albert had thought the iodine pills a good idea back in Kennedy Meadows, when he’d been ruthlessly tossing things into the get-rid-of pile. Albert, who’d been felled by a waterborne illness the very next day. I had to wait thirty minutes for the iodine to do its work before it was safe to drink. I was desperately thirsty, but I distracted myself by filling my other bottle with water. When I was done, I laid out my tarp on the dirt beach, stood on top of it, and took off my clothes. The wind had mellowed with the fading light. In gentle wafts, it cooled the hot patches on my naked hips. It didn’t occur to me that anyone might come along the trail. I hadn’t seen a soul all day, and even if someone did come along, I was too catatonic with dehydration and exhaustion to care. I looked at my watch. Twenty-seven minutes had passed since I’d plopped the iodine pills into my water. Usually I was starving by evening, but the idea of eating was nothing to me now. Water was my only desire. I sat on my blue tarp and drank one bottle down and then the other. The warm water tasted like iron and mud and yet seldom have I ever consumed anything so amazing. I could feel it moving into me, though even once I’d had two 32-ounce bottles, I wasn’t entirely restored. I still wasn’t hungry. I felt like I had in those first days on the trail, when I’d been so astoundingly exhausted that all my body wanted was sleep. Now all my body wanted was water. I filled my bottles again, let the iodine purify them, and drank them both.

My feet had gotten to the point that each time I rested it hurt more the next time I got up to walk, their various sores reopening with every new effort. I limped behind Trina and Rex down a path through the woods that took us back to the PCT, where there was a small clearing among the trees. “Cheryl!” Stacy called, coming to hug me. We talked about Hat Creek Rim and the heat, the trail and the lack of water, and what the snack bar had to offer for dinner. I took off my boots and socks and put on my camp sandals and set up my tent and went through the pleasant ritual of unpacking my box while we chatted. Stacy and Rex made fast friends and decided to hike the next section of the trail together. By the time I was ready to walk back up to the snack bar for dinner, my big toes had swollen and reddened so much that they looked like two beets. I couldn’t even bear to wear socks anymore, so I hobbled up to the snack bar in my sandals instead, where we sat around a picnic table with paper boats of hot dogs and jalapeño poppers and nachos with fluorescent orange cheese dripping off the sides. It felt like a feast and a celebration. We held up our wax cups of soda pop and made a toast. “To Trina and Odin’s trip home!” we said, and clinked our cups. “To Stacy and Rex hitting the trail!” we cheered. “To Cheryl’s new boots!” we yelled. And I drank with solemnity to that. When I woke the next morning, my tent was the only one in the clearing among the trees. I walked up to the bathhouse meant for the campers in the official park campground, took a shower, and returned to my campsite, where I sat in my camp chair for hours. I ate breakfast and read half of A Summer Bird-Cage in one sitting. In the afternoon, I walked to the store near the snack bar to see if my boots were there, but the woman who worked at the counter told me the mail hadn’t arrived yet.

But his one dream, the only thing he wanted out of life, was to leave the city and move up to his beloved property at Wolf’s Den, which he had inherited from his father. He complained weekly to Limori when I lived at the house that he wanted to do this. She would assure him that the time would come and eventually it did. After that, every time I saw him at Wolf’s Den he was like a kid in a candy store. Limori was master and commander at Wolf’s Den, but Matthew exuded the vibe of a grizzly bear protecting his territory. He didn’t have to say anything or do anything to prove this; he was king of that particular piece of forest. In his quiet way, the pleasure and joy that he felt about every moment he spent living in the small piece of wilderness he and his father had carved out was readily apparent. As sometimes happened, large, ultimately shocking and/or hurtful, pronouncements were often introduced apropos of nothing, like the one Limori made about Matthew transferring the title of Wolf’s Den over to her. She would interject them into unrelated conversation and then not refer to the subject again for days or weeks. This type of technique did give me the impression that it was God speaking through her. She would just pop out minor, or sometimes major, changes that people needed to make in their lives and then let the topic go, while the person affected stewed about what was said. I have to assume that this was to allow the recipient of the news to adjust to what he/she was being told. In the Wolf’s Den instance, Matthew said nothing, and in his calm and confident way seemed to take it all in stride. I never heard anything about the matter again myself and it wasn’t until I began writing this book that I remembered this event and wondered what had ever happened about the title to Wolf’s Den. Limori is now the sole owner of Wolf’s Den. Matthew’s name is nowhere on the title. When I asked a friend experienced in this sort of thing to do a title search, I was not surprised at all when he discovered this. Matthew’s beloved Wolf’s Den is no longer legally his. I can see, in hindsight, that it was not much of a stretch for Limori to realize that if she wanted to build an empire she would need a place to put her throne. Wolf’s Den must’ve fit the bill perfectly: remote enough that the practices there wouldn’t cause too much fuss, yet a business location, offering lodging for fishermen and hikers and operating as a restaurant for the lodgers and the local community, which could and does bring in an income. Better yet, payroll doesn’t cut into the revenue because the disciples at Wolf’s Den work for free.

"Wow," I gasped because it seemed to be our word. It stood in for what I didn't say, which was that for a guy who wasn't much of a conversationalist, he was ass-kickingly good in bed. And I hadn't even fucked him yet. Without a word, he took a box of condoms from the Safeway bag and ripped it open. When he stood, he reached for my hand and pulled me up too. I let him lead me across the sand to the gathering of boulders that formed a cove and we circled back into it, to what passed for private on a public beach — a cranny among the dark rocks in the broad light of day. It wasn't the kind of thing I was into, having sex outside. […] We took each other's clothes off and I reclined with my bare rump against a sloped boulder, wrapping my legs around Jonathan until he turned me over and I gripped the rock. Alongside the remnants of honey, there was the mineral scent of salt and sand and the reedy scent of moss and plankton. But, like Jenny in the ballad... "She could not think it he," and lay staring up at him in startled silence, till he stooped and kissed her. Then she knew him, and flew up, crying joyfully... "Oh my Teddy! Oh my Teddy!" "Dear Jo, you are glad to see me, then?" "Glad! My blessed boy, words can't express my gladness. Where's Amy?" "Your mother has got her down at Meg's. We stopped there by the way, and there was no getting my wife out of their clutches." Lifton’s second criteria for thought reform is mystical manipulation. He describes this by saying, “Totalist leaders claim to be agents chosen by God, history, or some supernatural force, to carry out the mystical imperative. The ‘principles’ (God-centered or otherwise) can be put forcibly and claimed exclusively, so that the cult and its beliefs become the only true path to salvation (or enlightenment).” Because of this, “the individual develops the psychology of the pawn.”2 No kidding. I left for England on Monday, June 30, and spent a glorious month travelling on my own around the country that I had been dreaming of seeing for years. I even drove on the wrong side of the road, much to the frustration, I am sure, of the other drivers, who had the poor fortune to be sharing the motorways with me. I returned to Canada on a Wednesday evening in late July and on the next night, Thursday, I went to Michael and Jessica’s for our closed circle meeting and shared some of my adventures with the group. Michael, Jessica and I hadn’t yet told the rest of the group what God had asked of us – that would occur a week later. And so began the Mistress Period, as Michael and I started to refer to it. Michael and Jessica continued to live in their apartment in False Creek, going about their daily lives in much the same way as ever. We had been instructed that Michael and Jessica would continue to live together and be married and that he and I would be lovers. Michael viewed it as he and I continuing to be good friends who now slept together occasionally, while he continued to be married to Jessica and fulfill the role of husband and primary support person on her spiritual journey. The only concession was that he was to sleep in a separate bedroom. Despite the twisted context of the relationship, it was a huge relief to finally be able to fulfill my physical longing for Michael. The sexual and emotional tension that had existed between us for so long was released and was replaced by a deep, heartfelt joy at being together. Naturally, the intimacy between us deepened and I was thrilled to discover that we were as well-matched physically as we had been intellectually and temperamentally. My heart still leapt into my throat with excitement and joy every time Michael walked into my sight, but now I felt I had permission to feel the way I felt. I allowed myself to fall even more deeply in love with this man I’d already loved for so long. And I prayed the landing would be soft. Because we were required to keep this matter secret from anyone outside the group, no one else in our lives knew about it. Secrets like this served to reinforce the “us versus them” atmosphere in the group.

At Coblentz we had a lovely time, for some students from Bonn, with whom Fred got acquainted on the boat, gave us a serenade. It was a moonlight night, and about one o'clock Flo and I were waked by the most delicious music under our windows. We flew up, and hid behind the curtains, but sly peeps showed us Fred and the students singing away down below. It was the most romantic thing I ever saw—the river, the bridge of boats, the great fortress opposite, moonlight everywhere, and music fit to melt a heart of stone. When they were done we threw down some flowers, and saw them scramble for them, kiss their hands to the invisible ladies, and go laughing away, to smoke and drink beer, I suppose. Next morning Fred showed me one of the crumpled flowers in his vest pocket, and looked very sentimental. I laughed at him, and said I didn't throw it, but Flo, which seemed to disgust him, for he tossed it out of the window, and turned sensible again. I'm afraid I'm going to have trouble with that boy, it begins to look like it. The baths at Nassau were very gay, so was Baden-Baden, where Fred lost some money, and I scolded him. He needs someone to look after him when Frank is not with him. Kate said once she hoped he'd marry soon, and I quite agree with her that it would be well for him. Frankfurt was delightful. I saw Goethe's house, Schiller's statue, and Dannecker's famous 'Ariadne.' It was very lovely, but I should have enjoyed it more if I had known the story better. I didn't like to ask, as everyone knew it or pretended they did. I wish Jo would tell me all about it. I ought to have read more, for I find I don't know anything, and it mortifies me. Now comes the serious part, for it happened here, and Fred has just gone. He has been so kind and jolly that we all got quite fond of him. I never thought of anything but a traveling friendship till the serenade night. Since then I've begun to feel that the moonlight walks, balcony talks, and daily adventures were something more to him than fun. I haven't flirted, Mother, truly, but remembered what you said to me, and have done my very best. I can't help it if people like me. I don't try to make them, and it worries me if I don't care for them, though Jo says I haven't got any heart. Now I know Mother will shake her head, and the girls say, "Oh, the mercenary little wretch!", but I've made up my mind, and if Fred asks me, I shall accept him, though I'm not madly in love. I like him, and we get on comfortably together. He is handsome, young, clever enough, and very rich—ever so much richer than the Laurences.

"Oh, she liked it, and she kissed me, and I liked it. Don't little boys like little girls?" asked Demi, with his mouth full, and an air of bland satisfaction. "You precocious chick! Who put that into your head?" said Jo, enjoying the innocent revelation as much as the Professor. "'Tisn't in mine head, it's in mine mouf," answered literal Demi, putting out his tongue, with a chocolate drop on it, thinking she alluded to confectionery, not ideas. "Thou shouldst save some for the little friend. Sweets to the sweet, mannling," and Mr. Bhaer offered Jo some, with a look that made her wonder if chocolate was not the nectar drunk by the gods. Demi also saw the smile, was impressed by it, and artlessy inquired. .. "Do great boys like great girls, to, 'Fessor?" Like young Washington, Mr. Bhaer 'couldn't tell a lie', so he gave the somewhat vague reply that he believed they did sometimes, in a tone that made Mr. March put down his clothesbrush, glance at Jo's retiring face, and then sink into his chair, looking as if the 'precocious chick' had put an idea into his head that was both sweet and sour. Why Dodo, when she caught him in the china closet half an hour afterward, nearly squeezed the breath out of his little body with a tender embrace, instead of shaking him for being there, and why she followed up this novel performance by the unexpected gift of a big slice of bread and jelly, remained one of the problems over which Demi puzzled his small wits, and was forced to leave unsolved forever.

They proclaimed that I had a beautiful aura and was an “old soul” with wisdom and understanding well beyond my years. I succumbed to their flattery and the attention they paid me, which was oh, so welcome. The information that Limori shared always had to do with values and practices that seemed wholly good: following one’s heart and listening to one’s own “guides,” doing good things to change the planet in constructive and positive ways, projecting positive energy to other people, living without judgment of others, etc. The message Limori brought was not one of doom and gloom or the urgency to save the universe from darkness. (That would come later.) For the moment, she talked to her spirit guides constantly and had us tuning in to practice our psychic abilities as well. It felt like being a part of a great cosmic magic troupe, where anything could and did happen. And so, based on my first experiences with Limori and feeling as though I had found something essential that I had been searching for my entire young life, I found myself belonging to a group of kind, thoughtful, big-hearted people who were interested in all the values and virtues that seemed significant and worthy. There were no sacrifices, human or otherwise, during our Wednesday night meditation meetings. No fire and brimstone (yet), no demands from Limori’s seat that we do anything odd or repellent, no violations of anyone’s personal boundaries. The group was, at that point, all about peace, love and understanding. We met once a week, from 8 pm to 10 pm. There was a small drop-in fee that enabled Limori to rent the space we used. We often spent the first part of the evening in discussion; from around the ring of chairs, members of the group would ask questions of a spiritual nature and Limori would answer them after tuning in to her spirit guides. Later we would partake in a guided meditation that Limori or Sheila and their spirit guides led. The meditation circle was my introduction into the importance of community in a human life. For perhaps the first time, I felt surrounded by people who got me. The world of higher education had not made me feel at home, and for my last few teenage years before going to university, living with my father and stepmother hadn’t felt much like a home either. To meet a group of people who were interested in the deeper questions of life and spent time reading and exploring and questioning seemed almost too good to be true. I cannot emphasize enough how the feeling of belonging somewhere filled a void in me and at the same time made me hunger for more. Because of the tremulous place I was in, in my own life, the satisfaction of that feeling made me hold on for dear life. With the exception of my mother, stepfather and brother, it was all I had.

The Professor didn't know what to make of her, and stopped at last to ask with an air of mild surprise that was irresistible. . . "Mees Marsch, for what do you laugh in your master's face? Haf you no respect for me, that you go on so bad?" "How can I be respectful, Sir, when you forget to take your hat off?" said Jo. Lifting his hand to his head, the absent-minded Professor gravely felt and removed the little cocked hat, looked at it a minute, and then threw back his head and laughed like a merry bass viol. "Ah! I see him now, it is that imp Tina who makes me a fool with my cap. Well, it is nothing, but see you, if this lesson goes not well, you too shall wear him." But the lesson did not go at all for a few minutes because Mr. Bhaer caught sight of a picture on the hat, and unfolding it, said with great disgust, "I wish these papers did not come in the house. They are not for children to see, nor young people to read. It is not well, and I haf no patience with those who make this harm." Jo glanced at the sheet and saw a pleasing illustration composed of a lunatic, a corpse, a villain, and a viper. She did not like it, but the impulse that made her turn it over was not one of displeasure but fear, because for a minute she fancied the paper was the Volcano. It was not, however, and her panic subsided as she remembered that even if it had been and one of her own tales in it, there would have been no name to betray her. She had betrayed herself, however, by a look and a blush, for though an absent man, the Professor saw a good deal more than people fancied. He knew that Jo wrote, and had met her down among the newspaper offices more than once, but as she never spoke of it, he asked no questions in spite of a strong desire to see her work. Now it occurred to him that she was doing what she was ashamed to own, and it troubled him. He did not say to himself, "It is none of my business. III. Across the span of a century, three great mystics advanced the understanding of the higher reaches of mystical prayer. A. Francisco de Osuna (c. 1492–c. 1540) was a Franciscan whose teaching emphasized the prayer of quiet recollection. 1. His positive teaching on recollection in The Third Spiritual Alphabet (one of six Alphabets he composed) represented a stance contrary to that taken by those advocating prayer of abandonment or “passing away.” 2. His robust good sense concerning contemplation had a powerful effect on Teresa of Ávila and, through her, on John of the Cross. B. Teresa of Ávila (1515–1582) combined the personal experience of prayer with an extraordinary ability to teach others the path of contemplation. 1. Teresa joined a Carmelite monastery at age 20. She suffered physically from chronic illness and experienced both intense mystical states and great difficulty in prayer. 2. After a vision of hell, she instituted a more rigorous form of the Carmelite life, and the rest of her life was spent in founding communities and teaching them. 3. The Book of Her Life (1562) relates Teresa’s experiences up to the founding of her first community; The Way of Perfection (1565) provided teaching in the contemplative life for her nuns; The Interior Castle (1577) is her most mature exposition of the “consolations and delights” of the prayer of quiet. 4. Her vision of the soul as a castle with seven dwelling places enables her to trace with charm, humor, and personal authority the path toward mystical unity with God through the prayer of quiet or of recollection. 5. Teresa is a writer who has great personal authority; in Book IV of the Interior Castle, she gives us a lovely metaphoric contrast between water that is run through aqueducts or plumbing and water that simply rises up from a spring. 6. Like other mystics of this period, Teresa had “intellectual visions of our Lord,” but she distinguished between what she called the mystical betrothal with Jesus (a fleeting experience of unity in prayer) and the mystical marriage (a lasting experience). ©2008 The Teaching Company. 91
